3 Things You Need to Know About Changing an 80% Gas Furnace to a 90% Gas Furnace
Going from an 80% efficient gas furnace to a 90% efficient gas furnace isn’t just a straight across change out. There are 3 critical things to consider.
- You have to run condensate lines to deal with the extra moisture in the fuel. Using existing waste lines for the condensate can be corrosive to the waste line, especially if it’s copper. Also, the condensate may have to be pumped, and you may have to protect the condensate lines against freezing. In a commercial building, a neutralizer is required, as well.
- A 90% efficient gas furnace requires a PVC flue due to the extra moisture in the flue gasses. An 80% gas furnace will have a flue, as well, but it is composed of metal, which isn’t appropriate material for the 90% efficient furnace.
- A fresh air combustion intake is required. The way the 90% furnace is designed requires fresh air intake, which usually means penetrating an exterior surface.
